Domain name selection could be made part of the hardware ordering process. A corresponding TLS certificate could pre-installed on the system along with the rest of the software before shipping to the customer.
Consideration should also be given to incorporating nextgen naming and pki infrastructures that do not rely on the broken x509 Certificate Authority system. I'm thinking primarily of DNSChain/OKturtles.
