What network protocol is the WinMX Peer Network?
Is there an existing protocol in mld that is similar and could be adapted?

They seem to have a ton of stuff available. The 'movies' link in the linked 
page (at bottom) seems to indicate that files have distinct hashes.

The WinMX client itself supports WinMX peer network and OpenNap.  Does that 
make them similar?
