I don't know about an option in the configs, but "mlnet -stdout" does the trick.

Diskspace Usage:
No idea.

Tempdir in Download dir:
Why don't you just mount your drive to /example and creatie a dir /example/incoming and /example/temp in it? That way both the incoming and the tmp are on this seperate hdd and you no longer have the problem you described before. If I would be a mldonkey coder I would not spend time on implementing not to share a tempdir in the incomings dir ;)
