this is a bit of a tradeoff. on the one hand, using the key hashes
means you can probably rename keys and at very least put up with
conflicting names. on the other hand, from a UI perspective it means
users have to use yet-more hashes when they prefer to use email
addresses (and those addresses are somewhat mentally associated with
people, over time). it's a bit like the question of whether to use
stable names for branches, or GUIDs.
