In pd you have the engine communicating with the interface thru a socket, currently the interface has been implemented in Tk, but already appeared a
Gtk+ interface, and even a no-interface interface :)

With the way it's set up right now the frontend must be C or C++. I think if the GTK interface is flexible enough and provides different views of the data (different little windows) then there won't be as much need for alternative pluggable interfaces. If somebody can make a curses version work, well, more power to you :-). Not sure how you'd draw the unit generator setup in ascii though.
