Follow-up Comment #5, bug #30715 (project octave): The "Unable to open file" errors are because octave was compiled with the 8 bit version libraries of libgraphicsmagick++1-dev and libgraphicsmagick1-dev. If you rebuild graphicsmagick from source with quantum depth of 16, then install the aforementioned dev libraries that resulted, and then rebuild octave from source you will get octave packages that properly read 16 bit images.
