Follow-up Comment #2, bug #36122 (project octave): Apparently the reason is that the calculation of the separation between ticks can lead to fractional month value. I propose to add a test in datenum.m to throw a more explicit error in case month value is fractional and a slight correction to datetick to avoid fractional month values.
