excample:

octave:1> [c, ia, ib] = union({'a' 'b'}, {'b' 'c'})

c =

{
  [1,1] = a
  [1,2] = b
  [1,3] = c
}

ia =  1
ib =

   1   2


In my opinion ia should be [1 2 ] and ib should be [2 3]
