Thanks for noticing this.  I committed a patch to the development branch of
Octave which fixes this for perl and
python(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/c6ae30f73946).  To access
the fix you will need to build from Mercurial sources or wait until the 3.8.0
release.
