Follow-up Comment #1:
The symbolic package in Octave is unmaintained and badly broken. Even when you
get it to not crash, it doesn't do anything all that useful. For example, it
doesn't work on arrays.
If you are interested in fixing this, this is an outstanding GSoC project for
Octave:
