Follow-up Comment #24:
The attached changeset has addressed all of jwe's concerns that I could
identify.
The other change from v4 is that it now uses file_ops::tilde_expand to expand
paths starting with user names. It doesn't expand partial user names, partly
because Octave's password object doesn't support it, and partly because a
tilde followed by something not a username is likely to be a Matlab-style
negation.
