Follow-up Comment #4:
Reopening because that was the wrong fix.
The fileread function does read a file in binary mode, so you will get
carriage return characters in the return value if the file was written with
Windows line endings.
There may be a problem somewhere else in either the cp utility, or the mkstemp
function, or the fprintf function.
