Follow-up Comment #52, bug #49216 (project octave):
I have attached a patch for testing the effect of querying the "right" font
size (in points, not in pixels) in ft-text-renderer.cc.
The main issue I can see when running Dan's snippet (comment #38) is that both
bold and normal fonts (either Verdana or Calibri) look "bolder" above 12 pts.
This is the same effect as observed in Dmitri's screenshot from comment #40
except that without the patch it appears above 16 pts.
