@Rik: many thanks for the thorough review work.
Shouldn't we leave this report open since gnuplot toolkit still does not
support background area?
atcl in comment #4 provided a link to a so discussion about how to implement
this in gnuplot 5.x
I also pushed the patch for the layer of axes lines since this is actually a
regression from 4.2.1. See e.g. "demo hold 6" here
