Follow-up Comment #1, bug #53160 (project octave): This is caused by d2467914ce33 (https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/d2467914ce33) which does say it has to do with the variable editor. Before this change, displaying an integer value in the intepreter called pr_int with fw=0, so no padding was done.
