Follow-up Comment #42, bug #55287 (project octave):

Just to add a possible clue, it may help narrow in on the culprit to point out
that $delete(gca); (like clf) avoids any massive accumulation of memory,
however, deleting only the axis' children with $delete(get(gca,'children');
does not.
