Follow-up Comment #3, bug #56700 (project octave): The Matlab documentation for gunzip (https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/ref/gunzip.html) says gunzip(gzipfilenames) extracts the archived contents of each file in gzipfilenames to the folder containing gzipfilenames so it is possible that this is why we didn't do this earlier.
