Follow-up Comment #15, bug #57107 (project octave): We're using libiconv. I didn't find an option that does this fallback conversion automatically though. And definitely don't use the diff I uploaded previously. It leaks and doesn't advance the pointers correctly. (But maybe it was good enough for demonstration purposes.)
