Follow-up Comment #31:

I pushed another patch here that switches to the same syntax we use in the
test to turn on UTF-8 mode of PCRE:

That also resolves the nuisance that the index in error messages from PCRE was
off by 7.

I think this was the final patch necessary to finally resolve this bug.
Marking as ready for test.
