Follow-up Comment #15:

Maybe some change in the graphics backend has caused that the single patch now
is so much faster than calling patch repeatedly with smaller subsets.

I didn't notice a regression and also the issue with the colorbar on scatter
plots seems to be fixed. So I went ahead and pushed the change here:
