Follow-up Comment #10, bug #58695 (project octave): I think undefined values can be avoided, and should be errors when detected in matrix lists. The problem here, in my opinion, is that x.a should return an empty octave_value_list, instead of an undefined value. I attach a simple patch for your consideration.
