confirming the same behavior on Windows, v6.3.0. attached image showing
side-by-side of octave and matlab 2021a figures after the commands:

set (gca, 'ylim', [0 1000])

set (gca, 'ylimmode', 'auto')
set (gca, 'xlim', [1 11])
