Follow-up Comment #2, bug #62736 (project octave):

Try the suggestion in comment #1 (adding "drawnow" to your script).

This is likely to be some quirk with the OpenGl driver, your particular
hardware, and possibly the operating system.  If "hold on" were not working
there would be a huge number of bug reports.
