Follow-up Comment #2:

Patch works fine in my testing.  I don't think it would hurt to put it on
stable, but I also don't see a big reason to do so.  The current behavior has
been present for at least 10 years (checked with 'hg blame') so if this waits
until the next major release that would be fine.
