Follow-up Comment #4, bug #63523 (group octave):

now also seeing this note in graphics.in.h: 

    // Matlab allows incoherent data to be stored into patch properties.
    // The patch should then be ignored by the renderer.


so it seems some lack of input validation might be intentional.  should at
least review the compatibility of any GIGO fixes.
