Follow-up Comment #1:

also confirmed on the development branch (octave 10.0.0), xyz inputs are
converted to azimuth and elevation by cart2sph, and there's a matlab
compatibility shift in there that points to changes due to bug #57800 (that
fix rolled out with v6.1).  will try to review to see where the issue occurs.
