Follow-up Comment #21, bug #65712 (group octave):

Sorry, crossed with jwe.

I started that fix by returning *this, but then realized I didn't know the
semantics of that statement for reference counting, like would it return a
reference instead of a value etc. I copied over the code from lower in the
function to make a copy. If returning *this is better, I will change that
part.
