Sure, but a fundamental design decision of Octave has been to try to be
Matlab-compatible. I've seen quite a few cases where the core devs decided to
follow this principle rather than try to make Octave behave in a "proper" /
"superior-to-Matlab" way. Let alone if "proper" / "superior-to-Matlab" can
really be proved objectively.
I'm an Octave user who at work must switch regularly between Matlab and
Octave, if only when reading or creating data files using both SW, and things
like described in this report can be overcome but tend to induce IMHO
completely unneeded extra care.
So if the issue here is due to just some design decision, why don't we decide
to be Matlab-compatible?
