Follow-up Comment #18, bug #66617 (group octave):

Directly manipulating and looking at the value of "ans" seems strange to me.
Maybe structfun should also be a built-in function so that it can do a better
job of handling this corner case?  But if not, maybe the attached change would
be better.  Won't the check for "ans = []" be the wrong thing to do if cellfun
happens to return the empty matrix?
