Your example is about a textual data field containing some non-string
element. This is not a critical case, because we do not aim to implement
an advanced word processor within Octave. Therefore, I think the simple
solution as proposed by Andy would be sufficient - at least for this
case.
The problem with making something that doesn't handle what you consider a
non-critical case is that someone else will consider it a critical case.
I think that what Andy is writing with what I just posted will handle all
cases.
