Because matlab always worked and to change it might introduce backward
incompatibilities. Thats what you get when you have a language that was
never written with a clear API.

The infrastructure is there to do it with the patch I sent. It's just an
argument change to the DATA_REDUCTION macro to add it to the other
functions. I'd hesitate to do this though at this point.
