BTW, using 3.3.5 and trying (slightly modified) John's example:

octave:1> backend ("fltk")
octave:2> title ("foobar 10", "fontname", "Inconsolata")
octave:3> title ("foobar 10", "fontname", "Inconsolata")
octave:4> warning: could not match any font: *-normal-normal-12
warning: ft_render: unable to load appropriate font

Notice that the warning shows up only on the second invocation.
It did find and used Inconsolata font (it has a distinctly slashed zero).

Where does this warning is coming from?
