I wish I knew more about IDL.  

I think the only graceful thing about R is the formula notation (and maybe
heterogeneous data frames, tho the associated complexity of typing makes R
NASTY).  For slinging around matrices, matlab/ octave is FAR more powerful, in
my estimation.
