hmmm, still looks like gnuplot 4.2 to me. From Octave, what does 
__gnuplot_version__ return?

If you have built 4.4, you can point to it from the Octave command line by 
using 'gnuplot_binary ("/usr/local/bin/gnuplot")' ... assuming you've placed 
gnuplot 4.4 in /usr/local/bin.
