Do you think QtOctave can help with this perception? While I don't
think that QtOctave nor any other glorified terminal is inherently
useful, psychology can go a long way. At the moment, QtOctave is
teetering at the brink of abandonment, and I have half a mind to fork
it, based on the belief that Qt produces the most native-looking
cross-platform look and feel.
Something really has to be done about communicating via pipes with
Octave, though, something more like what OctaveDE does.
