Something that I think is worth considering is to have another renderer for
2D plots. For instance using cairo. It's a fact that OpenGL is not well suited
for 2D-only plots, for instance when things are in the same Z-plane, but you
still want to respect a stack order.
Note that I'm not talking about another backend, just another renderer.
Several renderers can be used within the same backend.
