Something similar happens for gnuplot qt term as well.  It's probably a 
safety measure configured for this system.

About the same as what I have, maybe a little older.  Anyway, I managed 
to get things working.  GUI behavior seems to have stabilized on its own 
after the first launch.  (Maybe it was some previous infinite loop 
versions of the GUI still running that caused problems first time around.)
