Sorry for the confusion.  I now understand what you did.
The problem was not the sort stability: it was the right vs. left
discontinuity.  So, it is true that both Octave and Matlab
sorts are stable (Matlab was not in the past...)

One remaining question: Does matlab 2010 have the functions:
visort, vqsort or vrsort?
