It should also work to change test/Makefile to use

  $(top_builddir)/run-octave -valgrind ...

instead of

  $(top_builddir)/run-octave

Maybe we should change the test/Makefile.am file so that this can be
done more easily with something like

  make RUN_OCTAVE_OPTS=-valgrind
