..and then the most recent changeset.

The Ubuntu results are consistent with MacOS X, so I have no objections
with leaving it as it is.

The use of spacers (as opposed to adding space characters) as you illustrated is the proper way to do things, but it currently looks pretty good for now. As developers learn to work with Qt layout, can revisit.
