most users don't even see that the package is a tar file,
they just install with "pkg install -forge".
A user who can go to the src directory and run configure manually
is also able to set CPPFLAGS manually, so while indeed a little bit more
convenient this feature is not tremendously

not completely different, being able to provide options directly to pkg
will make the feature really accessible.
