Strange; I do not need this patch and I am not building "--without-zlib". Are 
we talking about OS X 10.11.5? I have

>ls /usr/lib/libz.?.?.?.dylib
/usr/lib/libz.1.1.3.dylib
/usr/lib/libz.1.2.5.dylib

I will try to apply the patch and see if anything changes...
