Follow-up Comment #3, patch #8607 (project octave):

Seems like Octave already has an interface for HDF5 (see ls-hdf5.h at
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/file/290adbbe95bd/libinterp/corefcn/ls-hdf5.h
)

Should this file be using it (or part of it)? Also, I will guess that the
improvements that this patch requires to read the HDF5 files should be done
there as well.
