Follow-up Comment #1:

It may be overly restrictive, but it is also Matlab compatible.  I also
wouldn't think to use issymmetric on a char matrix since it is more
interesting for numeric matrices where it says something about the solution. 
If you really want to there is always the workaround of casting the char to a
numeric matrix before calling issymetric
