Follow-up Comment #16, patch #9000 (project octave): I have fixed optimize_branch_cuts to accept "incomplete" (not closed) polygon sets and renamed it to polygon2patch as you suggested (attached). It already accepts XY matrices and X & Y vectors (plus XYZ matrices & X & Y & Z vectors). For the mapping package I'll write a polycut.m that offers more input options (a.o., cell arrays) and merely calls polygon2patch.m in geometry.
