If with "external function" you mean "round" and/or "rand", that seem OK to
me. In core Octave many many BIST tests rely on behavior of other core
functions.
Same for calling "toJSON" in a BIST for "fromJSON". We want to test  functions
in a real environment where they are all available, isn't it?
Or do I misunderstand your question?
