Follow-up Comment #2, patch #10021 (project octave):

Correct there is no geodeticfwd.
It looks like this would supersede meridianfwd.
When writing meridianfwd it seemed better to write the stronger version and
then create the wrapper.

Also there are many functions which check the spheroid, and it has been
improved on. 
Would it be better to have this be a private function? 
Where you would only need to update in one place.
Something like the attached.
