Follow-up Comment #5:

seeing that bug #43959 was applied and closed in 2016, with most of the final
work happening a month after Andrew' he'd look at how to merge them (no
comment over there on if he borrowed any of this), it may be worth someone
familiar with kmeans looking at the current version of the function and this
patch, and determining if this patch can/would improve the current version.
