I tried your patch with Octave-8.0.0 (dev) on Linux and Windows 11, and it
works perfectly.

Did you completely remove the "Rename" menu when RMB-ing on a file name in the
File Browser pane? because the option is still there but does nothing.
For the time being I think it may be handy to keep that popup window around.
