Log message:
        * Copies the original $(ASP_OBJ) file and patches it if GCC 3 is being 
used.
        This makes the $(ASP_OBJ) appear like it was built using GCC 3.
        The benefit is the user no longer has to force the loading of the module
        if the kernel was built using GCC 3. I haven't come across any issues
        as a result of this patch.
        * Better identification of the compiler.
        * Separate the detection of the chip and the chip specific variable
        assignments.
